Depending on where you live winter kayaking can seem a little daunting. If the weather has turned cold in your neck of the woods, suiting up with the right kayak gear will be very important in order to keep your paddling adventures enjoyable. Listed below is a winter kayaking checklist to make sure you are warm, dry and happy. Winter Kayaking Do’s and Don’ts… - One of the most important things to remember while kayaking in the winter time is not to wear cotton. Seriously… do not wear cotton! Cotton will basically soak up any water and hold it against your skin. Essentially it can make you freeze. So no cotton.
- The next think to remember is to wear layers. Wear a moisture wicking top as your base layer, such as a Hydroskin shirt that will minimize water absorption while at the same time reflecting your body heat back to you. Your next layer should be your insulation so either a fleece or a sweater and your top layer needs to be your waterproof jacket and pants.
- Keep your feet hands and head warm and dry. In other words you will need water booties for your feet and possibly a pair of water socks, a good pair of kayaking gloves and a toque.
- Many people like to use either a wetsuit or a drysuit while kayaking in cooler weather. The wetsuit is the much more affordable option and likely all one will need, especially if you are a recreational kayaker. The drysuit , though a very handy piece of kayaking apparel, is really only worth the money if you are a hardcore kayaker.
Key Points to Remember for Winter Kayaking… The key point to remember is to do what you have to in order to stay dry and warm. If you allow yourself to get even the slightest bit wet in the cold weather, it will be very difficult to warm up again and your paddling trip will likely be cut short. If the water still moves, then you are still able to kayak. Keep these guidelines in mind and enjoy your paddling adventures year round.
