There are countless baits you can make to give you complete confidence when winter carp fishing. Many of them include highly digestible ingredients additives and liquids that easily travel through water to trigger feeding in the lowest temperatures. Here are some very well proven ideas for winter boilies, pellets and paste recipe formulations! Liver in its many forms have been a traditional part of carp baits and offer carp an enormous list of powerful reasons to consume it. This does not simply mean that carp are triggered into feeding by it but it offer carp very valuable essential digestible nutrition. Nutritional baits can have an almost addictive effect on carp when established but great additives, ingredients and all kinds of substances do not have to be used for long term effects, but simply to get a bite right from the first cast! Personally I feel that as most angler have very limited time it is a good idea to make homemade baits that really are instant baits but offer nutritional and various other factors that make such baits effective longer-term baits too. Liver powders, predigested liver, soluble liver extracts and liquid liver products are reliable things to base a winter bait around for the purpose of this article, but there are countless others! Quality liver products like many other very high quality protein sources used in carp baits cost more in monetary terms. But when compared to using lesser products they provide that all important top performance and vital confidence that you need when the going gets really tough and temperatures plummet! The choices of other ingredients etc to include with liver in an effective all year round and winter bait can be almost anything suitable but winter baits are very effective with low protein levels so you can get away with using far less expensive protein ingredients etc than at other times. A total bait protein content of only 26 percent is quite adequate for fishing for carp in low winter temperatures but the quality, digestibility, solubility and combination of total nutrition in such baits takes some careful working out and refinement in practice! Using whole egg powder instead of using just liquid eggs ensures your bait substances are not so locked up so letting the bait release its attraction more effectively and boiling times for winter baits should be kept as minimal as possible! A liver based winter base mix can include many other ingredients and additives including the following: Mixed bird foods, kelp powder, soya flour (of the type treated for trypsin inhibition,) low temperature fish meals, meat and poultry meals, whey proteins, keramine, wholemeal semolina, acid, rennet and lactic caseins, calcium caseinate, rice flour, maize protein such as MP60, various protein hydrolysates, etc. The vast choice of possible wet and dry ingredients, how and why they impact on carp in different ways can seem very confusing when starting out. Just messing around with a very basic recipe to begin experimenting with gives you a starting point that you can refine further and then use as a reliable control bait of your very own that is unique to you alone. This last point is very important and should not be dismissed as the benefits of using your own unique bait recipes are enormous - and if pure confidence is something you highly value, they definitely provide you with this! It is one thing to discuss ingredients etc with your friends; but do you really want them cutting short the full potential of your own baits by allowing them to copy your bait and putting you in just the same situation that so many anglers are in who use popular readymade baits that are available to everyone? The liquid part of baits is incredibly important. Many carp angler think of eggs, flavours and oils and maybe something like liquid liver as liquids. For winter baits always consider the proportion of oil present in your base mix ingredients and additves and liquids and use minimal oil levels. If you have a bait that has a total of 5 percent oil that is absolutely fine although it is probably more likely most homemade winter baits will be more like 10 percent fat for various reasons. Many soya and bird food products as well as eggs contain a significant level of fat, as do many fish meals and many other marine ingredients for instance! Just remember to include a liquid lecithin to improve your bait performance and bait digestion inside carp! Why not talk to Phil at CW Baits (see online,) and he will give you more specific inside information on this additive among others; why his totally unique readymade baits contain it and how it enhances winter bait performance so well! For a liver bait, it seems most anglers would go for a stereotypical liver or liver sausage type of flavour to match; but why not be different?! All you need to do is think more about which other tastes and flavours could easily go with liver to produce for carp an unusual experience. I would not hesitate to put a quality spicy, creamy, fruity, meaty, fishy or other marine type flavour or flavour combination to a winter bait of this kind. But frankly speaking liquids to be used in baits can be literally anything you can make into a liquid and do not even have to be concentrated flavours at all. Thinking along these lines can easily produce for you very many unique, every effective and highly economical liquids that other anglers will never even think of using and that carp will never have experienced the like of previously. The following example demonstrates my point; even commercially-available liquid Belachan products are most usually simply boiled down Belachan blocks! So do yourself a big favour and think about more unusual options for your personalised baits - because the carp will certainly experience the difference and this will be strongly proven by your improving catch results!
