Top 4 Glacial Lakes in Nepal to Visit in 2023

Travel & Tourism
Are you planning a mountain trip to Nepal where you can see beautiful glacial lakes and attractive mountain views? If yes, several places have been given below, which can be a perfect destination for you to go to in 2023.

Nepal is a country with thousands of snow-capped high mountains in the north. There are lots of small and big glacial lakes in those mountain regions, so you can make an adventure journey to see them in 2023.

The glacial lakes I am going to provide information about in this post are big and beautiful to see and not like small ponds. While walking to see these lakes, you can also see stunning views of the high mountains and lots of other natural beauties. Those beautiful glacial pools that I am going to talk about in this post are the famous mountain trekking routes in different regions in Nepal. What are those amazing places to visit in 2023 then? Let’s check them below:

1 Gokyo Lakes

Gokyo lakes are in the Everest region and are the most visited lakes in Nepal by travelers. There are thousands of adventure trekkers visit Gokyo to see these beautiful Himalayan pools every year. There are five different lakes and the lodges are located close to the 3rd one.

After walking for around 4 hours toward Cho-Oyu mountain, you reach the fifth one from where you can see a beautiful view of Mt.Everest from bottom to top. You can visit this place doing the Gokyo valley trek or the Everest base camp Cho La pass trek.

2 Tilicho Lake

The highest elevated glacial pool in Nepal is Tilicho lake (4919m). It is in the Annapurna region (Manang), which you can see with the Annapurna circuit Throng La pass trek. You reach here on the 9th day after leaving Kathmandu including a one-day altitude practice rest day in Manang and also reach on the 6th day after Kathmandu. You need to drive direct to Chame from Kathmandu to reach in 6 days, a direct drive to the high elevation is not a good idea.

You can trek back the same way after visiting this beautiful lake, cross Throng La or Mesokanta, and go to Mustang, that depends on your time and interest.

3 Birendra Lake

Birendra lake is in the Manaslu circuit trekking route, which you can go to see from Samagaun when you have altitude practice rest day. It is at the bottom of Mt.Manaslu. You drive from Kathmandu to Arughat, Sotikhola, or Machhakhola from Kathmandu and walk for a few days to reach this place.

You can walk back the same way after visiting this or go over the Larke pass. Larke pass trekking is a beautiful adventure mountain trip in Nepal, which is a restricted region that allows a limited number of people every year.

4 Gosaikunda Lake

Gosaikunda is the nearest Glacial pool from Kathmandu. It is a pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists, so there will be a big festival in August every year. There are several Kunds like Gosaikund, Suryakund, Bhairavkund, Saraswotikund, and others. You can reach Gosaikund in three days from Kathmandu. You drive to Dhunche on the first day and then walk another 2 days through a steep mountain path. You can see a long ranged mountain views from Lauribinayak along the way to Gosaisthan. Lauribinayak is one of the best hill stations from where you can see Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Tibetan massif, and also the Annapurna Himalayas. Besides above listed Himalayan lakes, there are several others also in the Nepalese mountain region. There are few visitors compared to the above-mentioned. Rara ( the biggest in Nepal) and Se-Phoksundo (The deepest) lakes are also nice to see.

When is The Best Time to Visit These Lakes?

September to December is the best time to visit these glacial lakes in Nepal because the weather stays bright in these months, so you can enjoy stunning mountain views too. They start to freeze in winter and keep ice in spring too. Although, the mountains look nice in spring in these areas.

If you do not care about seeing the Himalayas and are just interested in glacial pools, you can even visit in the summer. You can see greenery surroundings and beautiful colored lakes in summer.

Cannot go to The High Elevation?

All right, if you scare with the high altitude and cold temperature to visit these glacial lakes, you can see some other attractive tranquil pools while visiting Nepal. Fewa Taal and Begnas Taal in Pokhara are nice to visit and boat on these. You can see a nicely reflecting scene of the Annapurna mountains in the water. You can also get fish from these places while visiting. You can reach here with a long drive of about 6-7 hours on a tourist bus, public bus, or hiring private transport to Pokhara. Alternatively, you can also fly to this city from Kathmandu. Fewa Taal is close to the hotel where you stay but you need to drive about an hour to the east to go to Begnas lake.
