Visit Historic Reims on a Barge Holiday in France

Travel & Tourism
Picture yourself on the deck of a vessel on the water, sipping a delicious glass of bubbly while the sun beams down. Doesn’t that sound dreamy? Well, that’s what you can expect from a barge holiday in France, particularly in the region of Champagne, home of the world-renowned sparkling wine. A trip down the beautiful River Marne, which bisects the area, is the perfect getaway for gastronomy enthusiasts - or just anyone who enjoys tasty delights!

France may be well-known for its food and wine scene, but the Champagne region is particularly famous. As well as the extensive vineyards spread across the picturesque landscape, a barge holiday in France will treat you to historical sites and towns, including Reims, which is one of the highlights on this route. Not only is it a buzzing capital of the area, it’s home to one of the most impressive medieval cathedrals in Europe. But that’s not all! Let’s discover what resplendent Riems has to offer.

Attractions in Reims

Visit a Champagne House

You can’t travel all the way through Champagne and not visit one of its famous houses - many of which date back to the eighteenth century. And with all of the big names to choose from, including Veuve Clicquot-Ponsardin and Tattinger, it’s well worth taking a tour. You’ll get to explore the man-made chalk tunnels that provide the perfect conditions for creating that iconic fizz and flavour we love so much.

Reims Cathedral

If you only have time for one other thing, make it a visit to the cathedral. This UNESCO World Heritage Site takes centre stage in the ancient town, and rightly so. For over eight centuries it was the venue of the monarch’s coronation ceremonies - Joan of Arc attended mass there.

Even if you’re not into history, the architecture itself deserves some time. The fourteenth century masterpiece was built on the site of a fifth century church, where the first ever Christian king was baptised. It’s a wonderful example of the High Gothic style and its vault measures an impressive 38 metres tall. It’s truly breathtaking.

Palais du Tau

Another monument to history (and a UNESCO-listed building) is the Archbishop’s Palace. The Neoclassical palace gives you the chance to step back in time, as you can wander through the royal apartments where kings would have slept and dressed. It was also home to the post-coronation banquet for more than ten centuries.

Chapelle Foujita

For something a little different, you might want to visit this little curiosity. Designed by Tsuguharu Foujita, a Japanese painter, this 1960s chapel sits in the gardens of Mumm house and offers visitors vibrant and beautiful frescoes to admire. Check out the stained glass as well, which was created by master-glazer, Charles Marq.

As you can see, there are many wonders to explore and enjoy on a barge holiday in France. From gastronomic delights to marvellous historic sites. Reims is just one of the many gems in the Champagne region, which makes it the perfect destination. Why not start researching itineraries for your barge holiday in France today?
