A couple of months ago my partner noticed a lizard sitting on a wall in our living room. She felt compassion for it, and said that I should help it get outside so it wouldn’t die in the house. My wife is a kind and compassionate woman. I admire her for that. Compassion is an excellent human quality. I would never question the sincerity of a person offering compassion to another life-form. However, in some cases I might be skeptical of a person’s motive, intention, or reasoning behind making a statement like this. Not in this instance of course. :) At first I agreed with her . . . as any good partner should. I thought “Yeah, the poor lizard. It will die if I don’t help it get outside.” After I pondered the situation for a minute, I came to a different conclusion. It came to me like this – the lizard was smart to get into the house, so the lizard should be smart enough to get out. Who am I to think that I am smarter than this sovereign life-form and to believe that it needs me to “save” it? My point is that we humans mistakenly believe we are “superior” to other creatures on this planet. Mystics (Metaphysicians or metaphysicists) explore the meaning of life by studying metaphysical spirituality and philosophy. I’m a firm believer in spiritual evolution. This means that the human consciousness expands as it experiences life. Humans are meant to grow in awareness and understanding. It seems to me that at some point in the spiritual evolutionary cycle, humans as individuals and as a Collective Being, made a dangerous leap in attempting to grasp the meaning of life. I can see that humans somehow became disconnected from Mother Nature. We acquired the false belief and attitude that the planet was “created” exclusively for humans. For more than a century humans have engaged in an insane war to conquer the natural world and all living things in it. This is a destructive human quality. In my humble opinion, humans have very little insight into the intricate design that has gone into creating the conditions necessary to support life on this beautiful planet. When say “life”, I am not just referring to human beings. The word is “life” is inclusive of all living things. Humans have a responsibility to the planet. Our responsibility is to live in harmony with all other life-forms and be conscious in how we use its limited resources. This means that should we refrain from destroying everything our path. It is not in our interest to eradicate the very life-forms we depend on for the survival of our race. There a universal principle I call the Law of Equilibrium. This is not a “New Age” term. It is a sound metaphysical theory. The meaning of this principle has to do with being in “balance” with Mother Nature. The Law of Equilibrium is violated when humans operate from a sense or feeling of deprivation. Deprivation is the fear of “never having enough”. We can see this fear manifest in humans in the alarming materialistic attitude “We want more!”�People have become frustrated and anxiety ridden in their misguided attempts to fill their holes with “things”. We have taken to consuming everything we lay our eyes on. Like a child, we look at a physical object and say “mine”. If we understand the illusory nature of reality, it’s becomes clear how foolish this mentality is. Some enlightened folks have discovered that there is no satisfaction to be found in materialism. Instead, they understand that “things” can only be temporarily possessed and not owned. People with a healthy attitude towards life do not form unhealthy attachments to the things in their lives. They treat life with respect and understand their responsibility is to live in harmony with the physical world.
