Glasgow has a long sporting history and it is a very important part of the city’s culture. Glasgow is the home of three professional football clubs, a professional basketball team and a professional rugby union team. Glasgow has three professional football clubs, Rangers Football Club who are based at Ibrox Stadium. The stadium is situated in the Ibrox area of Glasgow to the south west of Glasgow City Centre, to the south of the River Clyde and is one of the oldest football stadiums in the UK. Celtic Football Club is based at Celtic Park (also known as Parkhead) which is the second largest stadium in Scotland with a capacity of 60,832. Celtic Park is located to the south east of Glasgow City Centre, in the area of Parkhead, on the north of the River Clyde. Celtic and Rangers Football Clubs together are known as the ‘Old Firm’. Partick Thistle Football Club are another professional football club and are based in the Firhill Stadium which is situated in the Maryhill area of Glasgow, to the north west of Glasgow City Centre. As well as being home to Partick Thistle Football Club, Firhill Stadium is also home to the Glasgow Warriors Rugby Union Team. Hampden Park is another stadium which is situated in the Mount Florida area of Glasgow, to the south of Glasgow City Centre and to the south of the River Clyde. The stadium serves as the national stadium of football in Scotland and is also home to the amateur football club Queen’s Park. As well as football matches, the stadium also plays host to a variety of music and sporting events. As well as major football clubs, Glasgow is also home to the Glasgow Warriors Rugby Union Club who are one of two rugby union teams in Scotland and play in the Magners League. The Glasgow Warriors are based at the Firhill Stadium, located in the Maryhill area of Glasgow. The Easterhouse Panthers are a rugby league team and are based in the East End of Glasgow. The Glasgow Rocks are Scotland’s only professional Basketball team. The Glasgow Rocks are currently based in the Kelvin Hall which is situated in Glasgow City Centre and they compete in the British Basketball League.
