If you are into screen printing or want to apply a design to fabric, you will no doubt have come across the problem of colouring fabrics that are darker than your design colours. This means that your design will not show up on the fabric, so what can be done? The solution is to use plastisol ink for the design. This is a plastic ink as the name suggests. It is not water soluble and does not sink into the threads of the fabric. Rather, it sits on top of the fabric and gives a pattern with a raised texture that feels somewhat rubbery. This type of ink does not dry so if you use it for screen printing you can do so without a source of running water. However, if it does not dry, how can it be used on a fabric? It is done simply enough; it must be cured with heat. Of course, you can get a special device called a flash dryer to do the job of curing the ink. But it might be cheaper to put in into your oven if you don’t do much. The oven must be maintained at a temperature of 180C (or 350F) for 3 minutes to be properly cured. The ink comes in standard colours, fluoro colours and metallic colours so you have plenty of choice to make the best design imaginable. While this kind of ink is the choice of anyone who wants to place a design on dark or brightly coloured fabric, other fabric dies will give a softer feel. One thing you have to watch for is whether the fabric can withstand the heat needed to cure the ink. If it cannot, then a reduced temperature can be used for a longer time. Sydney screen printing supplies can be found online or at some craft supply shops. It is easier to shop online than to traipse over the city looking for a shop when you want specific inks or other supplies. Silk screen printing in Sydney is done with a screen of silk; it is not necessarily only done on silk material. Materials suitable for the process include cotton, Lycra, polyester mixes and silk as well as many other blends of fabrics. A creative person can have great fun with creating their own designs to place onto garments or linens. It is a good way to get something unique to wear as well as a fun hobby. However, you can also get a professional printer to make such clothing for you.
