The Latest Stance of Regionalism in Assam.

Public Speaking
It is observed that regionalism in comparison with nationalist political trend is seen stronger in India from the dawn of its independence. Some political elites criticize that regionalism is concerned with a particular geographical area and on the other hand National political parties are related with diverse interest of various geographical and historical backgrounds. But such explanation does not nullify the regional political aims and aspirations and its legitimate expectations. The indispensability of regional political party could not be nullified comparing with the dominion of a nationalist political party, because it is only the region which cohesively empowered the nation. A true federal democratic country could be formed through the self-governing regions with potent and independent socio economic agenda. This is the ground reality of regionalism which has been enriching the intellect of various ethnic and sub ethnic people of the state.

India is experiencing various regional imbalances from the date of its independence. The formation of DMK and AIDMK in Tami Nadu, National conference in Jammu and Kashmir,Telegu Desham in Andhdra Pradesh, Asom Gana Parisad in Assam, MaharasthrawadiGomantak Party in Goa, Mizo National front in Mizoram, Sikkim Sangram Parishad in Sikkim, All Party Hill Leaders Conference in Meaghalaya and Indian National Lok Dal inHariyana proved that the need of regionalism has been deeply felt by the majority of Indian people for the sake of ethno-racial identity, peace and prosperity. But the Government of India has not been giving proper importance to understand the ground reality of this country. It should be understood by the Government of India that the united effort is judge as progressive unti and unless it is not pressurized by any means ofcompellation. If it is compelled through enactment of so called constitutional constraints then it becomes a barbarian activity which must be condemned. No doubt it will lead us to complete devastation by degrees

On the other hand the present trend of globalization and free economic policy of our country are scaring the people of small races and various ethnic groups. The traditional culture, language and economy of the concerned ethno racial groups were hampered by the so called globalization. Such situations deeply intensify and broadened the fear of losing identity among them. In this context another factor of post- independence era is adding a new dimension to the diversified feelings. Assam enjoyed the independent statehood till the treaty of Yandabo which was signed in 1826 between Burma and British authority. This treaty was signed without being perceived by the people of Assam. The British got the ruling power of this country through the said treaty and in 1947 the political power transferred to the Government of India through the victory of independence movement. However Assam joined India with full heart expecting it's all round progress. When the aims and aspiration of various indigenous and aboriginal people has been distorted then the feelings of alienation started to grow up in some social strata which was first revealed in 1960 and got its robust form through formation of the ULFA in 1979. It proves the continuity of second rate importance of Indian government in case of the state Assam. In the present scenario it is observed that the said two factors (Globalization and the second rate importance of Indian government)are bumping and jolting the whole socio-economicaland cultural system of Assam. Now the aboriginal people along with indigenous plain and hill tribes are looking for a path of emancipation through which their socio economical expectations are fulfilled without losing their racial, linguistic and cultural identity. Therefore the peace loving people of this country are searching the way for a harmonious whole to provide the required base for peace and progress irrespective of race religion and language.

A section of people sought the way through introducing a regional political party in the mid eighties. It was a bold effort of this kind in comparison with the steps taken before. Almost sixty percent of the total population of the state supported the party with a hope of resurrection in all fields of regional life. But the leaders of the party were utterly failed in case of fulfilling the socio-economic desires of the common people due to lack of scientific political agenda. Instead of getting assurance of progress the indigenous plain and hill tribes along with big and small races were badly injured in all aspects of life and property. The leaders of this regional party gave birth of a skeptical environment through their activities and their regime was collapsed through the blemish of secret killing. The much vaunted regional political party which is known as Asom Gana Parisad has lost its complete faith of public and now this party is known as a party of secret killers. Manyregionalist leaders express that now the party has nothing in its back ground except the hero of secret killers known as Mr. Mahanta. Only because of this person the regional party has doomed forever. But it is unfortunate that the members of this party has not yet been understood the root cause of its fall. Though some courageous members oppose him and seek for alteration of leadership but because of some flatteries who worship Mr. Mahanta for their vested interest it could not be so happened. Someregionalist leader also express that only because of the secret killer the great devotee of regionalism Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal joined BJP and many other top leaders are still searching the way of going out of this party.

According to a survey it is understood that Congress (I) has been gaining political power only because of Mr. Mahanta. If AGP becomes capable of changing leadership then the grass root of AGP will be rejuvenate immediately. It will hinder the growth of Congress (I). So some leaders of Congress( I ) indirectly involved with dissuasive activities using monetary power in support of Mr. Mahanta. The Congress (I) wants Mr. Mahanta as a President of Asom Gana Parishad because of their political gaining. Survey also shows some clues of direct contribution of Congress (I) leaders in case of Mr. Mahantas return to AGP. Another ground reality of dooming AGP is expressed that the young generation who are newly qualified to be a voter generally ask a question. Why the President of AGPMr. Mahanta is surrounded by Black Cats? Immediate answer to this question is that he is suspected to be the secret killer for which he always keeps himself covered by Black Cats. Depending on such leaders what type of regionalism can be expected it is well understood by the people of this region. So the people of this region are seeking for a new platform of regionalism which will empower their aims and aspirations for the greater interest of the region as well as its various inhabitants. But it is not known when the desired platform will form or who will take the initiative for formation of such platform. The uncertainty is still continuing.
