Glory of Hamd and Naat in Urdu poetry

Poetry
Urdu poetry comes in many forms and each of its form is distinguished in its beauty and charm. Urdu language is however called as the language of poetry. The history marks its memories that with the origin of Poetry started the Hamd and Naat. These are also two of the forms of Urdu poetry.

A Hamd is a poem or song written in praise of Allah the almighty. The word Hamd is taken from the holy Quran, the book of Allah. The meaning of Hamd is Allah’s word or praise to Allah. It is written generally by taking the words from the holy Quran whose grand characteristic is not possessed by any other book in the world as this book has set forth in support of its Divine origin and its highness and superiority as no human being could ever produce one single line written in it that can be even compared to it. The prose of Hamd is beautiful and is usually sung with soft melodies. This is usually written in Arabic, Persian or Urdu and is sung and recited all over the world by Muslims. The Purity of Hamd is best absorbed in Urdu language as its prose when used in Urdu makes the poem more appealing.

Every Islamic event is initiated by the recitation of Urdu Hamd. Even a Qawwali performance usually includes at least one Hamd, which is traditionally the first song in the performance. They are many well known singers like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Sabri Brothers and Qari Waheed Zafar who have been the famous Hamd poets and singers of times.

Here are some of the lines of Hamd in praise of Allah the almighty:

“Khusha Who Din Haram-e-Pak Ki Fizaon Mein Tha Khusha Who Din Haram-e-Pak Khusha Who Din Haram-e-Pak Ki Fizaon Mein Tha Zabaan Khamosh Thee Dil Mehw Iltjaoon Mein Tha Zabaan Khamosh Thee Dil Mehw Iltjaoon Mein Tha Khusha Who Din Haram-e-Pak”

A Naat is a poetry that specifically written to praise the messenger of god, Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. commonly it is known as Urdu Naat Shareef. In Urdu language Naat is usually referred to as praise or poetry to the Prophet Muhammad who was the last prophet. It is a religious poetry usually written in Urdu.

During the time of Prophet Muhammad, poetry was a powerful form of artistic in the Arab land and an important part of their culture. Each tribe had their own special poets who held a very respectable position in the group that writes and recites this poetic form. People who recite Naat are known as Naat Khuaan or Sanaa Khuaan.

There are many poets and Urdu Naat Khuaans in the Islamic history, but Hazrat Hassan Ibn Thabit R.A had the honor of being the first of them all and the words of Hazrat Hassan Ibn Thabit’s R.A were a reflection of his blessed eyes, for his poetry is based upon what he himself has seen.

Here are some of the lines of Naat in praise of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w:

“Aanay walo yay to bataao shehr madina kesa he Sar un kay qadmon mayn rakh kar jukh kar jiina kesa he Gunbaday khazra kay sa-ay mayn beytth kay tum to aa-ay ho Uss sa-ay mayn rab kay aagay sajda karna kesa he Dil aankhayn or ruuh tumhari lagti heyn sehraab mujhay Dar pay un kay beytth kay zamzam piina kesa he”
