The FUTURE OF CDS In this article, the founder of the audio publishing company Fine Poets ponders the future of CDS as a publishing medium. Our company, Fine Poets produces audio CDS of classic Australian Poetry. The people that buy our CDS are generally older people who learnt the poems at school or middle aged people who are buying the CDS for their parents. Great for the car! Jack Thompson, The Sentimental Bloke, The Poems of C.J. Dennis Ah Doreen! A CD featuring the hilarious and lovesick poems of The Sentimental Bloke as he contrives a meeting, takes Doreen to a fancy show and finally marries her. Jack reads the work of CJ Dennis as nobody else can, full of humour, full of fun, revealing the rich and complex feelings of a young Australian man head over heels in love. Jack Thompson, The Battlefield Poems of Banjo Paterson Andrew Barton (Banjo) Paterson went to the Boer War and World War 1. This CD is Jack’s personal selection of twelve poems that Banjo wrote as a result of his experiences on the battlefields. They remind us of the comradeship, the quiet heroism of men standing by their mates and the absolute dependability of the Australian soldier. Jack’s reading of The Ode of Remembrance is also included as a special extra. Jack Thompson, The Poems of Henry Lawson From the hilarious Shearer’s Dream to the optimistic and moving After All, these thirteen poems are a great indicator of the broad range of Henry Lawson’s poetry and read in Jack’s mellifluous tones, well what better interpreter could there be? Jack Thompson, Live At The Gearin Recorded live on Mother’s Day in front of a capacity crowd at the glorious Art Deco Gearin hotel ballroom in Katoomba NSW, this CD presents an actor doing what actors do best, and the crowd loves it. Jack recites all the Paterson, Lawson and CJ Dennis favourites along with a poem written by Jack’s father, John Thompson for Patricia Thompson. There is also a DVD recording of the show.Jack Thompson, Live At the Lighthouse Under the stars of a tropical sky, this concert recording was made at the Darwin Festival and is our best value CD featuring ten favourite Australian poems and also Jack’s performances of If by Rudyard Kipling, I Strove For None by Walter Savage Landor and The Road Less Travelled by Robert Frost. Famous Australian Poems by Leonard Teale Take a trip down memory lane with Sgt Mackay of Homicide fame! Not everyone will know that Leonard Teale was also a champion of Australian culture in all its flavours, including being a master interpreter of the works of Henry Lawson and Banjo Paterson. Fine Poets has remastered seventeen of his original recordings originally made in the 1960’s and 70’s for this limited edition CD. It is unlikely to be re issued. The question for us now, is whether to go on producing CDS. For younger people, it is an outmoded medium. Everyone just downloads the tracks they want. But for our seniors audience, downloading is tricky. They’re not all computer literate, some don’t even want to me, they like to be able to buy a CD, but can we build a business using an outmoded medium? That is our dilemma.
