Over 700,000 pets in the United States have recently had birthday parties hosted for them by their owners, according to recent reports. This "pet party" craze has spread to other countries such as China, Japan, and England. If you are planning a party for your pet (particularly your dog), here is a list of party safety requirements to guarantee that all party animals have a pleasant and safe time. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it provides a solid starting point for your pet's party safety. Always use your best judgment to assess if something is acceptable for your pet and the other pets at the party. Without further ado, here are some dog party safety precautions:
Every dog at the gathering should have at least one person with whom they feel at ease.
If the dog's guardian is unable to attend your celebration, the dog should not go as well. You will not be held accountable if anything happens to the dog unless you feel comfortable monitoring it personally.
If any of the dogs' guardians forget to bring waste bags, be sure to have enough on hand. This is particularly true if the event is being held in a dog park or other public venue. Make sure you leave the venue in the same state it was in before the celebration.
To minimize any possible squabbles among the party animals, only invite dogs that your dog already knows and trusts. If your best friend's dog is nice but doesn't get along with your dog for any reason, it's better to keep them off the guest list. If you wish to invite a dog that your dog has never met before, arrange for a meeting between your dog and the other dog prior to the party. Canine bullies should not be invited.
If you're planning an outdoor celebration at a dog park or in your backyard, make sure you have a backup plan in case of inclement weather.
In terms of duration, you may organize the party for as long as you like; however, bear in mind that dogs might grow restless very quickly. If you observe that several of the visitors are becoming irritable, don't be hesitant to call it a night.
Make sure that wherever you choose to hold the party is securely secured and that there are no "cracks" through which any of the partygoers may slide. This is particularly true for the party's younger attendees. If your Rottweiler has begun digging a hole under your backyard fence, be sure it isn't large enough for your friend's Shih Tzu to climb through. If you believe the hole will be troublesome, fill it before hosting your party.
When it's time for treats, make sure each puppy gets his or her own. Allow each dog's guardian to deliver the reward to their own canine.
If you invite dogs that have not yet been spayed or neutered, notify the parents of the other dogs attending the party. Also, if you believe it is necessary, ensure that the owners of these dogs keep a close eye on their pets.
Only provide goodies that have been declared safe for dogs. Consult your veterinarian if you are unclear about the dog toxicity of any of the goodies you want to distribute at your party. It's also a good idea to check with the owners of the dog party attendees ahead of time to see if their dog is allergic to any specific food or ingredient.
