Why AC Unit Size Matters

Home Improvement
Let’s face it, in the world of air conditioning service, size does matter. It may sound cliché, but it does. Purchasing a wrong-sized unit could be harmful for your comfort and for your wallet. There is an assumption that “bigger is better;” however, to assume so would be quite the error. Several elements should factor into your decision on which AC unit to buy. Take your time, and make sure you pick what is best for your home and hearth. Alamo Austin Air Conditioning & Heating, the best air conditioning service in Austin, would even go as far as to say, “Take the Goldilocks approach,” and find a unit that is “just right.”

It’s Texas – you need AC. This is life, it’s essentially mandatory. Hopefully, you are looking for an air conditioning unit will provide that perfect combination of cool air and comfort. The size of air conditioning unit has a direct link with this.

Finding the “One”

The consequences of choosing the wrong size air-conditioning unit range from the minor to major – from spending unnecessary money to potentially affecting your health with mold-covered walls. An air-conditioning unit that is too small could leave your space with uneven temperatures throughout, while a too-large AC unit could “short-cycle” – meaning it would constantly turn on and off. Both options are not ideal and lead to higher utility bills. Now that the seriousness has been pressed upon, let us delve deeper into the world of air-conditioning services.

Essentially, there are three important aspects to understand when choosing a new AC unit. They are: tons, British Thermal Unit (BTU), and square footage of the space you want to cool. BTU is used to measure the amount of energy. One BTU is equal to the amount of energy needed to increase the temperature of one pound of water by one degree (Fahrenheit). An AC unit has the ability to remove 12,000 of BTU within a hour (1 ton = 12,000 BTU); therefore, a 2 ton unit has the capacity to remove 24,000 BTUs, a 3 ton can eliminate 36,000 BTUs, and so on.

Are you wondering how many BTUs are in your space? Here is an equation to find the answer: (square footage of space multiplied by 25, then divided by 12,000) – 0.5 = recommended amount of AC Most houses, on average, are 2,600 sq ft. This means a 2,600 square foot home multiplied by 25 would equal 65,000. Dividing that number by 12,000 gives you 5.41. After subtracting 0.5, it can be concluded that the average American sized home needs roughly five ton of air conditioning capacity. Alamo Austin Air Conditioning & Heating knows it can be difficult to understand, especially if there will be more than one unit on site. This is what we are here for – to help.

Let Us Handle It!

So let’s reiterate, all jokes aside, size does matter in the air conditioning service. Make sure to choose one that suits you and your space the best. There are many other aspects to choosing the perfect air-conditioning unit, that is why Alamo Austin Air Conditioning & Heating, your top choice for air-conditioning services, suggests letting our professionals take a look and assess the situation.
