Let's Go Fly a Kite: Kite Fishing in Florida

Hobbies

The whimsy of flying a kite helps people to capture or re-capture that free-floating feeling of what it’s like to be a child. Kite flying may seem purely recreational, but it actually has a powerful, although somewhat unclear, history. As you look for Cape Canaveral fishing charters in Florida, consider kite fishing as a fun and adventurous technique to try.

Where It Began

The exact origin of kite fishing is still being debated, but it is believed to have been utilized first in the Polynesian Islands in southern Asia. It is believed that the islanders would use kites to fish while still on the shores of the beach, or to fish in areas where it was too shallow or dangerous for a boat to reach.

Kite technology was first discovered by Europeans through Marco Polo’s travels in China. The Chinese claim that kites strong enough to carry the weight of a man have been in existence in their culture for centuries, and old military stories involve the use of kites for turning the tide in ancient battles.

Let’s Get Flying

Modern kite fishing is extremely popular today in New Zealand and Florida. It’s useful for catching surface-water fish like blackfin tuna, yellowfin tuna, dolphin, mahi-mahi, and black grouper.

Launching a kite with bait attached can be the trickiest part of kite fishing. This is partly because many fishing boats have a cabin, and any kind of obstruction can mess with the airflow. Trying to launch a kite behind a boat cabin that’s blocking the breeze can actually result in a downdraft in the back of the boat, which most certainly keeps the kites from launching properly. A great captain will know this and will keep the boat sideways during a kite launch to prevent this problem.

Boats will sometimes fly multiple kites at once, using different colored kites to help them determine which kite has gone down when. The kites are essentially dragging a bait back and forth through the water, keeping it in motion to attract the attention of fish. Often this happens while the bait is still alive, making them even more attractive. When a bait is caught, the reel attached to the kite is often electric and that makes the process of reeling a fish in much easier.

The Difference

Regular kites are not the same as the kites used for sea fishing, although the general mechanics are the same. Fishing kites are meant to interact well with the water, and even be able to be pulled underwater in the process of reeling in a catch. Sea fishing kites even have a fancy name: they’re called paravanes. These paravanes can be designed to carry lures at different depths for the purpose of better targeting specific types of fish. Usually working with a professional fishing charter means that they’ll have all this equipment, and you just have to pay to use it and their expertise. It’s a fair trade for a first-timer.

Kite fishing is an easier kind of sea fishing, and the kite flying portion can be a fun novelty for first-timers to sea fishing as well, especially kids. This is a great option to keep in mind as you look for an ideal Cape Canaveral fishing charter in Florida.
