An ingrown toenail can lead to intense foot pain that affects your daily life. The causes of an ingrown toenail can be hereditary, from trauma to the toe, improper trimming of toenails, poor fitting shoes, or nail conditions such as infections or losing a nail. Symptoms can include swelling of your toe around the nail, redness around the nail, pain and tenderness in both or one side of the nail, or an infection around the nail. Treatment options for an ingrown toenail can include soaking your foot in warm water and gently massaging the area of the toe where the nail is hurting you. Don’ attempt to cut it out with nail clippers, this will only make matters worse. If you are diabetic, at home treatment is not advised and you should speak with your doctor. Also, if you are unable to feel relief from the pain after 3 days, you should still consult with a foot and ankle specialist in Utah to see the best options for treatment. You should see a foot and ankle specialist if you experience severe discomfort, or redness and puss seems to be spreading. You should also consult a specialist if you have diabetes, as this can cause poor blood flow to the feet which will require more time to heal the affected area. If left untreated an ingrown toenail can lead to a bone infection, rare but possible. To prevent getting ingrown toenails trim your toenails evenly and straight across, wear properly fitting shoes, check your feet, and keep toenails at a middle length. Ingrown toenails are very common. They affect about 3 million Americans every year and are very treatable. To ensure you are receiving proper treatment for an ingrown toenail that has gotten worse, make sure to see a foot and ankle specialist. A specialist will know exactly how to treat your foot and will give you proper information to prevent any more toe injuries from the toenail in the future. A doctor will be able to examine your toe very easily and can even perform a procedure the same day. Some forms of treatment that only a doctor should perform are: lifting the nail and adding a material in the middle that will need to be replaced daily, partially removing the nail (this will happen if the area is very bad), or fully removing the nail (this will happen when the prior surgeries are unable to provide relief). At Summit Foot and Ankle we will provide treatment and recovery options for your ingrown toenail to help you get back to the things you love faster. Call us today to learn more.
