The Term “Marijuana” Marijuana is the dried, shredded brown, grey or grey combination of flowers, leaves, seeds and stems of cannabis sativa, a hemp plant. Marijuana consist of about 400 chemicals, the most potent of which is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a psychoactive or mind-altering chemical. In fact, the amount of THC determines the potency of marijuana. In the last 3 decades, the standard amount of THC that marijuana contains has continued to increase and the marijuana confiscated recently shows an estimated 10% of THC in a number of cases. It is commonly used by means of smoking joints, which are hand-rolled cigarettes. In addition, marijuana can be smoked with the use of bongs, bowls and pipes. It can be made into a resin concentrate called hashish or black sticky liquid known as hash oil. Others smoke blunts, a cigar with marijuana in place of tobacco while others mix it with food or brew it like tea. History of Marijuana Use The cultivation of marijuana or cannabis sativa was first documented in the US as early as the first part of the 17th century, wherein colonists took along the plant to Jamestown, Virginia so they can produce hemp. Way back then, marijuana was already recognized for its contribution to medicine. However, during the early 20th century, this permissive outlook changed completely. Uses and Side Effects of Marijuana In the last few decades, the medical uses of marijuana have sparked up a lot of controversy. Nevertheless, medical marijuana became legalized in 20 states though it comes in conflict with federal drug rules. THC, which is part of a group of compounds referred to as “cannabinoids”, has been used in treating several, different conditions such as: - Pain and nausea caused by chemotherapy
- Appetite loss in patients undergoing AIDS therapy
- Motor disorders in patients suffering from multiple sclerosis
By the time this was written, the FDA has not approved of the use of marijuana for medical purposes. The main reason behind this is that marijuana is a plant and the consistency of the ingredient obtain by a person every time he/she uses it cannot be accurately measured. Moreover, there is a lack of studies to support that marijuana use has more health benefits than risks. In contrast, THC-based drugs have already been approved and prescribed by the FDA. Despite the restrictions and challenges, scientists continue to explore the potential medical properties as well as uses of chemicals found in the cannabis plant.
