SURREY, BC — We all know the importance of having good dental hygiene and even the benefits to a well-formed, aesthetically correct smile. But, according to Dr. Aly Kanani, a Surrey orthodontics expert, achieving a Hollywood smile not only requires taking care of your teeth, but managing gaps in between teeth from tooth loss during childhood. According to a dental information Web site owned by Aetna, baby teeth act as a guide for erupting adult teeth. So, premature loss of baby teeth can result in improper or delayed eruption of adult teeth resulting in crowding, spacing, rotations, transpositions, underbites, overbites, and other orthodontic disorders. Due to gaps, teeth will often shift to occupy the open space. This blocks adult teeth from naturally erupting into place. When this occurs, the tooth often erupts on an altered path, which can produce any number of the misalignments mentioned above. There are many reasons why children and adults experience either premature loss of baby teeth or unwanted loss of adult teeth. These causing factors include genetics, periodontal disease, or other contributing factors notes Dr. Kanani. There are several treatment options, however, that enable people with missing teeth to avoid misalignment disorders. “In virtually all dental cases, prevention is always the best practice,” says Dr. Kanani, a Vancouver orthodontist. “When tooth or jaw misalignments occur, patients aren’t only experiencing an imperfect smile, there are also health issues such as periodontal disease, poor development of facial bones and the gums, impacted teeth, and other serious conditions requiring invasive treatment at stake.” Early treatment of tooth gaps and other alignment problems greatly impact how much future dental work a patient will need. With early intervention, a child can avoid tooth extractions and prolonged orthodontic treatment adds the Langley braces provider. Space Maintainers The Canadian Dental Association (CDA) explains that dental space maintainers “hold” spots left open by early or unwanted tooth loss. These space maintainers actively occupy the gaps on the gum line until the adult teeth erupt and fall into place. In the occurrence of losing adult teeth, space maintainers act as a temporary space holder while restoratives such as dental implants, bridges, or dentures are placed. Dentalfind.com, a cosmetic dentistry resource shows that there are several types of space maintainers. These typically fall into two categories: either removable or fixed dental space maintainers. Fixed Dental Maintainers A fixed space maintainer essentially stays in place until it is ready to be removed. The band-and-loop maintainer is a steel wire that loops around adjacent teeth to prevent those teeth from shifting and occupying the open space. These maintainers can be a simple steel wire holding adjacent teeth in place, or as a variation to this procedure, a dental crown can be affixed in the open space to provide a more cosmetic look. “A fixed space maintainer is especially useful for younger patients or for missing teeth that are easily visible,” says Langley orthodontics expert Dr. Kanani. “If a patient has lost a front tooth visible during speech or smiling, or if a child needs a space maintainer but can’t be trusted not to lose it, this procedure is perfect as the space holder can’t be removed without dental assistance.” For fixed maintainers, there are also distal shoe space maintainers. A distal shoe is inserted under the gums, and is used when the tooth in front of an unerupted 6-year molar is lost. Distal shoe appliances must be monitored frequently because the incoming tooth can easily become blocked by the wire. Removable Dental Maintainers Also great for restoring cosmetic appeal are removable dental maintainers. These appliances are removable, while an artificial tooth will be placed on the appliance to fill any gaps on the gum line. “Removable space maintainers with artificial teeth where there are missing teeth look and function a whole lot like retainers do for my braces patients,” notes Dr. Kanani, a Surrey invisible braces orthodontist. “The appliance can be removed, but holds adjacent teeth in place just as retainers hold a patient’s teeth in place after completed orthodontic treatment.” Learn More To learn more about dental space maintainers, visit Langley invisalign provider Dr. Aly Kanani’s Web sites: http://www.guildfordorthodontics.com/, http://www.langleyorthodontics.com/ or http://www.vancouverorthodontics.com/.
