Chattisgarh Sarees Are Civilized World Fabrics Made From Wild Silk

Fashion & Cosmetics,Female Entrepreneurs
The Chattisgarh saree is a pure silk fabric made from ‘wild silk’ yarn. Obtained from silkworms which breed on the trees in the Jharkhand forests, the silk yarn is coarser and has a lustre as compared to conventional silk from domestically bred mulberry fed silkworms. Chattisgarh is in the central part of India. Chattisgarh weaves woven by Bastar tribesmen produce kosa or tussar silk, pure cotton, linen and natural dyed saris. Tussar Silk, also known as ‘Kosa’ Silk, is made from silk obtained from several species of caterpillars, of the moth genus Antheraea. It is also known as ‘wild silk’, a name given because the silkworms breed on trees unlike mulberry such as Sal and Arjun found in the forests of Jharkhand. The raw silk has a deep golden colour and is of good texture. Tussar Silk staples are shorter and less expensive in comparison to that of cultivated silk because of the resulting quality of the produce from these silkworms in comparison to that from cultivated types. The cocoons are generally boiled to make the cocoon soft for easy extraction of silk, thereby killing the larvae within the shells. However some weavers prefer to allow the silkworms to leave the cocoon before boiling. This takes ten to fifteen days after they have fed on the leaves, and is popularly known as Ahimsa or non-violent silk .

Tussar Silk is mainly found in India, in the states of Jharkhand, Chattisgarh, and Bhagalpur in Bihar, which is also famous as a commercial centre for the production of Tussar Silk. Eastern parts of India like Orissa and West Bengal and a small portion of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh also contribute to Tussar Silk production in India. Chattisgarh Sarees are famous for the special use of the printing techniques of block batik and dabu. Organic dyes used, show up as vibrant color combinations on these saris. Tribal prints of trees, human figures, flowers, animals are popular motifs on the Chattisgarh Handloom Sarees. Ari embroidery, jaali or net embroidery in geometric or floral design is also a prevalent feature in Chattisgarh sarees. Tribals in Chattisgarh, for whom sericulture accounts as a major source of livelihood, are skilled weavers of hand-woven Tussar Silk Sarees. Hand spun and coloured with vegetable dyes, the fabrics they produce are eco-friendly. The use of leftover silk from woven fabrics, are also used to create designs on the main fabric and is a by-product of the need for variation in the weaves. A time-consuming arduous process, it has spawned a new breed of specialists in the art who are completely devoted to it. The woven Tussar Silk Saree has a coarse texture, is light on the body, airy and has a comfortable feel about it. However as a delicate fabric, maintenance requires a little care and attention, with dry cleaning of the Saree mostly recommended. Innovative experiments have created a fusion of traditional and trendy. A variety of saree as the Chattisgarh Silk Sari has tussar silk and dupion silk as the base fabric. The traditional Sarees have prints like block, batik, gold prints impressed upon them. Designer sarees have embroidered patterns such as chikan, gota, saadi, kohra etc. on the borders and pallu. These are liked and lapped up by the Market. Applique floral prints on the body of the fabric, with embroidery patch work border, in contrasting colours, is a popular fusion theme. The Kosa or Tussar Silk Saree is valued for its texture and is popular in the fashion world. Tussar silk saree woven with rich zari brocaded pattern is gorgeous and suitable wear for weddings, more so as bridal attire. Designer pure silk sari of Ari embroidery and having net embroidery on its border and pallu is a charming variety. This trending pure silk sari is apt for corporate conferences, festivals, college parties and social gatherings. Chattisgarh Poly Cotton sarees of exotic prints are exquisite, stylish and comfortable cotton offerings, and very appropriate for regular use. They suit both housewives and working women.
