The Slot Machines Cousin - Video Lottery Terminal – (VLT)? A Video Lottery Terminal or VLT is a gaming machine that allows gamblers to bet on the outcome of a video game.VLTs are controlled by a random number generator (RNG) at the main computer (central computer), but this is not the absolute rule! Some VLTs have a random number generator in each machine as well as by the central computer. Video lottery machines are stand-alone, player-interactive gaming machines which display games on a TV type screen with a video simulation of the common "slot" machine. Video Lottery Terminal are Class II machines and are interactive gaming machines similar to those commonly known as "slot" or Class III machines in the casino industry. Think of a VLT as a giant scratch off ticket. You play a VLT the same as you would a regular slot machine, the only difference is a VLT it a virtual lottery game. When the reels stop spinning they will display the results of what combinations are on the ticket. Video lottery terminals can be connected to a central computer, but can also be a self contained game , whose RNG is the sole determining factor as to when the game will produce winners or losers. The central computers purpose here is to collect information on the amount of cash the machine takes in as well as paid out tickets. VlLTs tend to have tighter payouts versus regular slot machines. The states that have VLT’s do not allow other forms of casino games, such a craps, roulette or other table games. Usually, VLT’s payback between 86 to 93 percent, but these percentages can vary from state to state. Regular slot slots tend to have higher payouts. In essence, the pay out and odds are pre-determined just as they would be when you by a scratch off ticket. Is this good or bad. You figure it out. VLTs are programmed that each machine has an equal chance of winning a series of limited prizes. There is no practical reason or advantage for offering VLTs vs. stand-alone slots other than for political considerations (to conform to local laws that ban slots, but allow lotteries) Class II game characteristics (Video Lottery Terminal Machines) a) The player is playing against other players and competing for a common prize. b) There is not necessarily a winner in each game. The game continues until there is a winner. c) In a given set there are a certain number of wins and losses. Once a certain combination has occurred it cannot occur again until a new game is initiated. This is most obvious in scratch off tickets games. Once a scratch off ticket has been sold the combinations on that scratch off cannot occur again until a new pack of tickets is open and are being sold. One game is dependent on previous games. d) The player must be an actively playing a machine. They must recognize when they have won and announce their winning. Bingo is an excellent example here. e) All players play from the same set of numbers as the numbers are announced. Class III game characteristics (Regular Slot Machine) a) The player is playing against the house. b) Each game is independent of previous games. Any possible outcome can occur in any game. c) Wins are automatically displayed and credited on the machines. The casino must pay a fee to the state for each Class III game and can only purchase so many Class III licenses. There is no such restriction for Class II games. Class II games are not as tightly regulated by the state. Wow! Totally confusing, isn’t it? Remember, you are at the casino to have fun, slot play should be fun.
