One of the most common questions that orthodontists are asked is, when is it too late for orthodontics? The answer is never. Orthodontic treatments in Utah may differ slightly for a fully developed adult mouth compared to that of a growing teenager’s. However, orthodontic treatment options are just as plentiful and efficient for adults as they are for teens. Following are five common treatments for adults. 1. Clear Braces: Clear braces align teeth through a series of transparent plastic retainer like trays. Clear braces are removable for eating and teeth cleaning and best of all, they don’t detract from your appearance. Average treatment time with clear braces is just twelve months. 2. Self-ligating Braces: Self-ligating braces work much like traditional braces. The most significant technical difference is that elastic bands and wire ties are replaced with specialized clips and brackets. The biggest difference for patients is less discomfort than traditional braces. Self-ligating braces also require fewer and shorter visits to the orthodontist. 3. Ceramic Braces: Ceramic braces work essentially the same as conventional metal braces. However, ceramic braces are designed to match tooth color to be less visible than metal braces. In the past, ceramic braces were known to chip and stain easily; however advanced composites have significantly reduced this problem. Another thing to note is that ceramic braces are more expensive than traditional ones. 4. Lingual Braces: Lingual braces are the same as traditional braces except that they’re placed on the back side of teeth rather than the front. Because they’re on the back of teeth, lingual braces are another form of non-visible orthodontics. While lingual braces are just as effective as other options, they come with more drawbacks. Of the options discussed, fewer people qualify for lingual braces. Additionally, lingual braces are the most difficult to become accustomed to. 5. Traditional Braces: This final option for orthodontic treatment is the one most of us imagine when thinking about braces. Metal brackets are placed on the front side of teeth and connected with a wire and elastic bands that gradually move teeth into the desired position. Traditional braces are the least visually appealing, but they’re also the most cost-effective. As orthodontic technology continues to develop, an increasing number of adults are opting to have orthodontic treatments. In fact, one-fifth of all orthodontic patients in Salt Lake Cityare adults. Newer treatment options allow adults to have their teeth aligned without sacrificing the use of their mouth or visual appearance.
