Ignorance of other types of plagiarism Plagiarism is one of those academic crimes that have given students a lot of worry. What if they are caught with plagiarized content? Could it end their academic journey? These and other questions have been the most concerns for many students. However, many students have not known the existence of other types of plagiarism. They have only known of the copy-paste act that is viewed by many to be suicidal crime. As one advances in their academic ladder, they are required to get to own the content of their publications. It is no longer about the percentage degree at which they have copied the content from the internet, but rather the ownership of the content. Plagiarism becomes more complicated and intellectual. Information content is more of how far we know who said what and who did a research on what. Various types of plagiarism emerge. Direct Plagiarism This is the plagiarism where word-for-word content is lifted from someone’s work without acknowledging. In this case, it becomes unethical, and the highest forms of dishonesty. In higher levels of education, this is no longer the case because having this plagiarism alone will not enable one to go further in their studies. Self plagiarism The self-plagiarism is where a student will submit some of the work they had submitted in the past without notifying all the professors who were involved. In this case, the professors have not been consulted. The student might, for example, incorporate some part of a paper they did in their diploma level with a thesis they do in their higher degrees. Another example is when student submits the same assignment or research work to two or more different classes without consulting with the professors involved. Mosaic plagiarism In this plagiarism, a writer will borrow phrases from sources but does not use quotation marks. The writer might make use of synonyms of the phrase but still maintains the structure and the meaning of the original. It is sometimes referred to as patch writing where the writer will paraphrase the content. It is still dishonest and is not acceptable academically. Accidental plagiarism In this plagiarism, a writer does not cite their sources, or misquotes the sources. The writer can also accidentally paraphrase a source using the same groups of words, and sentence structure without seeing the need to have attribution. Students are therefore required to make accurate citations and also ensure that they have a record of all the sources they have used in the research so that they make the right citations. Whatever form of plagiarism is dishonest in academic writing. Many students have suffered because of ignorance of the types of plagiarism.
