As students advance in their academic journey, nearly everything that they write has to be cited. The citation helps to reduce plagiarism, help the professor to check for facts about an essay, or evaluate the accuracy of information that has been presented by the student. It also helps the student to get information in case they come back to look for the same source in the future. Citing sources is a skill that any student should learn to embrace and improve because it will be mandatory to cite sources as one advance in their academic journey. However, as information and terminology in higher education get complex and murky, it can be a tedious task for students and their assignment-writing endeavors. It is for this reason that the terms bibliography, and works cited have been used interchangeably. Also, annotated bibliography has not been used exhaustively in the academic writing journey. In academic writing, many students have on several occasions confused between an Annotated bibliography and a work cited or bibliography page. By the way, a reference page refers to the list of sources in APA, while work cited is the same list in MLA. Works cited page is the list of the sources that you have used in your research. On the other hand, an annotated bibliography is the list of sources that one has used in their research paper but now with a paragraph describing the source. The paragraph is used to evaluate the source, and inform the reader about the significance of the source to the research. Annotated bibliography also helps in such elements as assessment of the quality, significance, and the relevance of the source. There is also bibliography which is common in academic writing. Bibliographies are the list of works that comes at the end of books, articles, and other published works. The role of bibliographies is to give a snap preview of what has been published about a given topic. A bibliography is the ideal point to start for a student who would like to undertake some research about a given topic. In case the student is not very sure which one the professor is referring to between a bibliography, annotated bibliography, and a works cited page, it would be prudent to ask the professor. It is better to make these inquiries at the start of the project instead of waiting up to the last minute and risk getting low grades.
