Comics (from the Greek ??µ????, komikos "of or pertaining to comedy" from ??µ?? - komos "revel, komos", [1] via the Latin comicus) is a graphic medium in which images are utilized in order to convey a sequential narrative; the term, derived from massive early use to convey comic themes, came to be applied to all uses of this medium including those which are far from comic. It is the sequential nature of the pictures, and the predominance of pictures over words, that distinguish comics from picture books, though there is some overlap between the two media. Most comics combine words with images, often indicating speech in the form of word balloons, but wordless comics, such as The Little King, are not uncommon. Words other than dialogue, captions for example, usually expand upon the pictures, but sometimes act in counterpoint. [2]Early precursors of comics as they are known today include Trajan's Column and the work of William Hogarth. By 19th century, the medium as we know it today, began to take form among European and American artists. Comics as a real mass medium started to emerge in the United States in the early 20th century, with the newspaper comic strip, where its form began to be standardized (image-driven, speech balloons etc). The combination of words and pictures proved popular, and quickly spread throughout the world. Comic strips were soon gathered into cheap booklets, comic books, and original comic books soon followed. Today, comics are found in newspapers, magazines, comic books, graphic novels, and on the web. Although historically the form dealt with humorous subject matter, its scope has expanded to encompass the full range of literary genres. Also see Comic strip and cartoon. In the anglo-Saxon world, comics are still typically seen as a low art[3][4][5][6],[7][8] although there are a few exceptions, such as Krazy Kat[9] and Barnaby. However, such an elitist "low art/high art" distinction doesn't exist in the French-speaking world (and, to some extent, continental Europe), where the bandes dessinées medium as a whole is commonly accepted as "the Ninth Art", is usually dedicated a non-negligible space in bookshops and libraries, and is regularly celebrated in international events such as the Angoulême International Comics Festival. In the late 20th and early 21st century there has been a movement to rehabilitate the medium. Critical discussions of the form appeared as early as the 1920s,[9][10] but serious studies were rare until the late 20th century.[11]

3. Examining The Genre Of The Blues
November 01, 2009
The Blues is an impulse to keep the painful details and episodes of a brutal experience alive in one's aching consciousness, to finger its jagged grain, and to transcend it, not by the consolation of philosophy but by squeezing from it a near-tragic, near-comic lyricism. Blues is the name given to both a musical form and a music genre created within the African-American communities in the Deep South of the United States at the end of the 19th century from spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts and chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads. It is a form of Afro-American origi... (read more)

October 16, 2009
When going around to the different garage sales I always find that mother that is sick and tired of her son?s stack of comics. Sale of these comic books go on behind their son?s back, or while he is out of town.
Some people think this is taken advantage of the sale since most mothers have no idea the real worth of what she is selling. Yes most of the time you get what you pay for but once in a while there is a gem.
There are always plenty of Mad Magazines and Spiderman, but my favorite is Conan the Barbarian. This comic book lasted for 23 years in its first publication from 1970 to 1... (read more)

13. Best comic books: it all depends on your perspective
October 16, 2009
When deciding on which are the best comic books what are the categories, all time, this year or only ones with supper heroes? Without argument Superman and Batman have been the favorites for so long that they will always be at the top of any list.
The two most famous do come from the same company, DC Comics. What is little known is that the first Superman was a villain. Back in the early 1930?s Hitler was on his rise to power and was going to create a race of supermen. The idea was changed almost immediately because the second issue of Superman had him as a crime fighter. The original c... (read more)

The year was 1982 when the first of many Epic Comics came off the printing press. This was a series of comics that had a targeted the older audience more than most comic books. 18. Collectible comics: depends on the person
October 14, 2009
For each person what are collectible comics is dependent on what their priorities are. There are general rules that most people go by but there are always exceptions.
The reason I am saying this I know a man that will not have anything to do any of the most popular comic heroes. Most of us think that Superman and Batman are great. But some have another opinion. But to each their own. On the most part, the older, rarer a comic is the more value it has. Its condition is also a major contributor to its value.

20. Adaptation Between Media
October 14, 2009
Whenever adapting material from one medium to another, there is always the danger of losing something in the adaptation. This usually happens if the original material was in the literary form, such as a novel or a comic book. Another cause might be the additional stress and anxiety on the director of the adaptation because the original material most likely had a sizable fan-base, which is liable to riot if anything too drastic occurs during the change.
More often than not, the core strategy for dealing with this sort of problem is to remove what could be considered "filler" material, leav... (read more)
