Mining is an activity which has to do with the extraction of minerals or other geological materials from the earth or from an ore body, a lode, a vein, seam or a reef. Mining is done to get material that cannot be grown through agricultural processes or created artificially in a laboratory or factory. Mining began long ago in prehistoric times. The first thing that was mined in France and England was flint which was made into flint tools. Then in Greece and Rome, silver was mined. There was the California Gold Rush in the 19th Century. Then there was the Australian Gold Rush in 1850s and 40% of the world’s gold is found in this place. Today, gold is mined all over the world. Gold mining began long ago in California but today there is a special place where there are gold mining adventures. In this camp site you can have a whole lot of activities. With the clear river water, you can go fishing. You can also go swimming and even diving should you be brave enough. Diving and swimming are not the only things you can do there. You can also go hiking and camping! At this camp site you have a whole lot of things to do. You can go on a picnic. There are picnic tables for you. There are also fire rings right by the river. Then to cap it all you get to attend a mining instruction class. If you stay until a Saturday, you will have a Saturday night cook-out. That is not all you get to go camping on the Mokelumne River where you have a lot of river to explore. The very best part of this camping experience is you get to do gold mining activities like panning gold, dredging and sluicing. Here are some of the exciting things you could do at camp. At this gold mining site, you get to pan with the patented gold pan which you may purchase from the general store of the camp. Then you get to experience what it means to sluice gold which another process of obtaining gold. What is a sluice? For mining purposes a sluice is a channel or trough which is constructed with grooves into which a current of water is directed in order to separate the gold from the sand or gravel containing it. In short, it is some kind of ‘rinsing’. Before you can have this experience, you will have to make reservations with the gold mining camp site so that gravel piles bearing gold may be prepared. Then when the sluicing experience is done, whatever gold is gathered from the gravel pile will be divided among the participants. You then get to keep the gold. Isn’t that a wonderful experience?
