This article will describe the four distinct phases of a bridge game. First of the four players must divide themselves into two pairs who will play against each other. But they are constrained to a bridge vocabulary of just fifteen words: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, spades, hearts, diamonds, clubs, notrumps, pass, double and redouble. Essentially the bidding phase is like an auction and usually the person who has the best cards or the best hand wins the auction and they are assigned the title of declarer for the next phase of the bridge card game, the play of the hand. The play of the hand is a lot simpler and a lot more straightforward than the bidding phase. The player to the left of the declarer starts the play by placing one of her thirteen cards on the bridge table. The play proceeds in a clockwise fashion until all four players have played one card each. Each player playing one card forms a trick, and there are thirteen tricks to each bridge game or hand. The player or lead also determines how the other players must play – they must play a card from the same suit as the opening leader – if they cannot, then they can play a card from another suit. This process is repeated thirteen times, leading to the final phase – the scoring. The score in the bridge game is determined depending on whether or not the declarer fulfilled the obligation he has made during the bidding or auction phase.
