Signaling For Help in Boating Emergencies

Boating,Advice,Travel & Tourism
Accidents happen. That is for sure. While we can never predict when they will happen, it is always best to be prepared so that you can save the lives of others--and your own. This thereby lessens the casualties incurred from the accident in the first place.

Besides the truth that accidents can happen, another truth is that accidents can happen anywhere--on land, in the air, or even on the sea. On the sea, the most common type of accident is a boating accident. Thankfully, many ships and sailboats will definitely have lifeboats aboard in order to bring passengers to safety. They have to adhere to rigorous international maritime safety standards in order to lessen casualties, so you can be sure that every caution has been taken to avoid accidents.

This is why it is imperative in the first place to be able to contact accredited lifeboat service companies to perform lifeboat servicing. When this is your last resort, you want to make sure that this is the safest, least likely to malfunction option available.

Regular lifeboat checks must be made in order to make sure that they can be used in times of emergencies. Lifeboats must have the appropriate equipment including paddles, an appropriate engine if needed, fuel if needed, and emergency life vests and first aid kits to help passengers who may need them. Besides sustenance, lifeboats must also have materials that will aid in rescue--such as help signals.

The most important thing to remember is to have the presence of mind to signal for help. Depending on the territory, there will be certain guidelines for Visual Distress Signals. These are very important as inclement weather will require a fast rescue--something that can be aided if visual distress signals are clear and appropriate.

Visual Distress Signals will be found in lifeboats. They can be of two types. One is pyrotechnic: these give of smoke and flame. A good example of this is flares, which is very recognizable to anyone who has seen a boat rescue on TV. Another kind is the non-pyrotechnic, which include flags and electronic equipment. According to some marine guidelines, it is recommended to have three pyrotechnic signals for day and three for night use. Electronic equipment will also have to meet territorial standards.

Besides having the proper equipment, always remember to keep a cool, level head, and have presence of mind topmost before anything else. It is very easy to panic in an emergency situation, but panicking will not help rescue come faster. Delegate tasks, tend to those who need to be tended, and focus energies on being rescued in whatever way possible. Ultimately, these are the best tools to have in any emergency situation, be it on land, air or sea.

When in doubt, always use your best judgment.
