Port Vell: Enjoy the Delights of Barcelona's Waterfront

Travel & Tourism,Art and Culture,Advice
Barcelona has so much to offer, but the beautiful Port Vell is often overshadowed by the neighbouring Las Ramblas. Located at the southernmost end of the famous street, Port Vell is a stunning harbour full of history and exciting activity. If you’re after some breath-taking views and unique attractions, this waterfront district is the place to go.

Go Exploring

While you’re visiting Port Vell, try and take a look at some of these fascinating attractions. There’s something for every type of traveller!

• The Maritime Museum

Fancy learning about Spain’s naval history? This museum not only housed some of Barcelona’s greatest ships, but was also the place where a lot of them were built. The building is colossal, and is still home to some famous ships today. Discover your inner sailor and go back in time to learn about Spain’s maritime progression.

• Columbus Monument

The huge statue of Christopher Columbus is hard to miss, standing right at the end of Las Ramblas. The monument is both famous for its height and what it represents; Columbus’ return from The New World. Since Barcelona harbour was the first of his stops upon return, the statue is particularly important for Port Vell.

• The Medieval Shipyards

Visit the old shipyards and delve even deeper into Spanish history. The ships in the harbour are a magnificent spectacle and something you will struggle to find anywhere else.

• Aquarium

You must certainly take some time out of your day to visit this magnificent collection of marine life. The aquarium is also a famous research centre, which has so far had an enormous impact on marine biology.

• Cable Car

This experience is a must if you’re visiting Port Vell (unless, of course, you’re afraid of heights!). The cable cars take you right across the port, so you can see far beyond the surrounding area.

• Maremagnum

If you’re looking to explore some more modern, city life, the Maremagnum is a fantastic place to spend the day. The shopping centre caters for every retail need, and also offers several coffee shops, restaurants and bars. Take a seat on one of the terraces overlooking the water and enjoy a cocktail with a view.

• Boardwalk

Officially named the Moll de Bosch i Alsina, Port Vell’s Boardwalk is the perfect place for keen runners, walkers or cyclists. The open space has a wonderfully tranquil feel to it, and the fresh sea air and surrounding palm trees will make you feel truly at one with nature.

How to Get There

Making your way to Port Vell couldn’t be simpler. A flight from the UK to Barcelona takes just two hours, and several airlines fly there regularly. A Barcelona airport transfer is your best way of getting to your destination without hassle, since Barcelona-El Prat airport is about an hour away from resorts in Port Vell.

If you book online, you will save yourself the trouble of waiting for taxis or public transport services. So, if you want to relax after your flight and have a safe and easy journey to your resort, a Barcelona airport transfer is definitely the way to go.
