Aldnoah. The power of an ancient civilization that was accidentally discovered on Mars. Along with it's discovery came the declaration of a new people, known as the Vers. The people of the Vers Empire, who once called Earth home, now shame their former planet for being inferior to them. Their power, the power of Aldnoah, greatly out weighs the technology of the Terrans back on Earth. However, even with this great technology, Mars is still a troubled planet. The Vers Empire constantly battles famine. Soon, anger arose, and the emperor of the Vers Empire did the only thing he could. He pointed all of the anger, the hatred, toward Earth. And so, in 1999, the Vers Empire declared war on Earth. The main spot of transportation was a hypergate located on the surface of the moon; however, after a tremendous battle took place, the hypergate went out of control. It exploded, taking half of the moon with it. Shards of the shattered half of the moon rained down death upon the Earth. It was at this time, that a cease fire was signed. However, the Orbital Knights and their powerful ships known as landing castles, could not return home through the hypergate. Instead, they made their home in the asteroid belt, being forced to look down upon the beauty of Earth, but not being able to touch it. That is, until they have good reason to. It is now 15 years later and, as a sign of good faith of peace, the princess of the Vers Empire, Asseylum, wants to visit the Earth. However, there are many Orbital Knights that wish for her to cancel her trip, for fear of her safety. Against their will, the princess visits Earth anyway, and is assassinated. Whipping up into a furry at the slaying of their princess, the Orbital Knights declare war, without any communication with the Vers Empire back home, and commence and invasion of Earth. However, was the princess really assassinated by the people of Earth? Or was it a plan all along to cause a war? There we have the basic plot for the story. As you can see, a war is about to break out between the people of Earth, known as Terrans, and the Vers Empire, of Mars. Unfortunately, the Vers Empire has the power of Aldnoah, a technology that severely surpasses anything that Earth could ever come up with. The difference in technology is immediately reflected on the battlefield, as many of Earth's forces are wiped out by the Orbital Knight's Landing Castles defenses. A Landing Castle is like a space battleship, that can also turn into, pretty much, a castle upon the ground. Quite cool, actually. So if Earth's forces can't even stand against the enemy's defense, what are they going to do against their offense? Die, which is pretty much what the beginning of the show is all about. Earth, quite literally, gets their butt's kicked real good. That is, until Inaho joins the battle. Inaho was a student at the time of the invasion, not a solider. However, since Heavens Fall, the incident that happened with the moon fifteen years prior, all students are required to take military training utilizing the latest technology. In this case, they train using Kataphracts, which are pretty much giant, armored robots with big guns! Anyway, after the invasion, and a lot of Earth getting their butt kicked, Inaho and his friends decide to take on an enemy in the area in order to help civilians escape. This enemy unit, which already took out tons of Earth units, is apparently invincible. However, thanks to the cool headed thinking of Inaho, which diagnoses the situation, he finds the enemy's weak spot, and exploits it. In short, Inaho is the cool headed, powerful main character that we all hope and dream of. He is just an ordinary boy, at least in the first season, but he uses his knowledge of the enemy to calculate counter strikes that are quite spectacular. Aside from Inaho, we also have Slaine. Slaine is a second main character, kind of. He is a person that was born on Earth, but now serves the Orbital Knights as a servant for various reasons. He was very close to the princess, and wants to get to the bottom of her murder. That's why whenever he finds out that the princess might still be alive, spoiler alert, he does everything he can to protect her. Though, he actually ends up doing more harm than good when he tries to help, unfortunately. This, in part, contributes to the character that he becomes in the second season. I'll leave it to you to discover that, though. All in all, I love this anime. The action sequences are quite well done. It can get a little difficult to tell what the heck is going on during some fights, but that happens in any mecha anime. That being said, they put time and detail into every fight. They show the enemy's strategy, the good guy's strategy, and then, of course, Inaho's counter strategy that will wreck everybody. On top of the nice action, we get quite a bit of drama and friendship stuff going on during the down time. We learn some secrets about some of the characters, some back story, and we get to see them develop relationships between each other. I honestly wish this anime would of had some romance in it, but spoiler alert, none of the main characters end up with each other, no matter how badly we want them to. If that's not enough to convince you, throw an awesome sound track on top of everything, and boom! You have a fantastic anime. For real, go watch it. You can watch it in English or Japanese. It's really worth the watch and it really well done!
