This week we are going to be taking a look at a very peculiar anime series. I say this because I have no idea how I feel about this anime series. It is very interesting and has a good plot, yet I can't get into the story and the characters just seem to be a little off. If you have never heard of Soul Eater before, I want you to imagine something. You know that song This is Halloween? Yeah, you know! Well, imagine what an AMV would be like for that song, and BAM! You have Soul Eater. Soul Eater takes place in a city called Death City, ruled and ran by Lord Death himself. Except he is not your typical Lord Death, he is very comedic and isn't scary at all. At least, if you aren't on his bad side. Lord Death instituted a school called Death Weapon Meister Academy, here young meisters and weapons are trained in order to take on the evil that are the kishin. A meister is a unique person that has the ability to control or wield a weapon partner. A weapon, quite literally, is a person that is able to transform their body into a weapon. A kishin is pretty much a very bad person; their soul has been consumed by evil and they turn to breaking the number one rule of NOT devouring human souls. So, they are hunted and killed, their own souls consumed by weapons. If a weapon is able to consume 99 kishin souls, and 1 witch, they will become a death scythe. This means that they get more power, and get to become death's personal weapon. So what's the story here? Well, we follow the lives of a couple of academy students, plus one son of death, in their quest to become more powerful. They, excluding death's kid, are what are called one star meisters, meaning they suck. Throughout the series they sometimes go out on missions in order to collect kishin souls. However, the main plot lies in the battle that must be fought with a couple of powerful witches. Medusa is probably the main enemy witch, and she is quite annoying. She is very powerful, and gets defeated a couple times and comes back; she has the creepy ability to be able to control snakes. Not as creepy as her sister, however, who is able to control....spiders. These two witches make up the main front of the enemy, with some other henchmen filling out the rest. That is, until the most powerful kishin ever may or may not get revived. This may or may not lead to some epic battles with Lord Death himself! Who are these main characters? First we have Maka, she is the daughter of a very powerful meister and the current death scythe, Spirit. She has a very rare ability to be able to sense people's souls. Soul is her partner, he is a weapon scythe. Black Star is another meister, though he claims he is a ninja, he is very obnoxious and has no idea how to sneak up on somebody. That being said, he is quite powerful. Tsubaki is his partner, she is the exact opposite of his personality, and has the unique ability of being able to change into different weapons or modes. Death the Kid is, well, the son of death, he's a reaper. He is very powerful, however can't handle anything that is asymmetrical. Liz and Patty are sisters that are his weapons, they transform into a pair of pistols. So what is the bad about this anime? Well, at the start Maka and Soul are only one witch's soul away from turning Soul into a death scythe. This would make you think that they are fairly competent, nope. Maka has no idea what she is doing half the time. She can already use a scythe meister's "ultra rare" move, yet she swings it around like a kid with a toy spoon, hardly ever hitting where she is planning, even then it gets blocked. She hardly ever learns, mostly she just complains about getting stronger but does nothing about it. Black Star and Tsubaki have more chemistry between them than the main characters do, which is kind of odd. I know they are supposed to be weak, but c'mon. They apparently don't learn a thing (referring to Maka and Soul). The good is that it is a fairly good story with plenty of action, drama, and comedy. I like it, just the character development drives me nuts sometimes. I would suggest this anime to anyone to at least try that like the action and comedy combo. It's not about fan service, it has a story that it sticks to. So, give it a whirl if you want. The introduction to the characters in the beginning is probably the most epic intro I've ever seen in an anime, it is very well done and explains the characters perfectly.
