What would happen if a gate to another world suddenly appeared in a major city? Moreover, how would that city's occupants react if an army came marching through it just seconds after it opens. Well, Japan is going to be the first to find out. On your just average day, a gate appeared in the streets of its major city. Within moments of noticing it, innocent civilians were sent running for their lives. An army that could only be described as something out of a fantasy novel came marching through the mysterious gate, and they were not here for peace. Luckily, the technology difference was almost humorous. The JSDF made quick work of this army with very few soldiers, and risking minimal casualties. Our main character, Itami, was in the midst of the chaos, helping civilians. A few months go by and Japan is ready. They are ready to send their forces through the gate to the other side. Among them is Itami, recently decorated with a promotion and honors from his work saving civilians in the attack. They march through the gate with tanks and weaponry, awaiting on the other side is what remains of the attacking forces. Like the first battle, the JSDF makes quick work of this army too, and quickly builds a base of operations just on the other side of the gate. If Japan wanted to dominate this new world, it easily can do it, but they want to try peace first. Japan decides the best route, for all involved, is to attempt to make peace with the empire. The empire is the main kingdom in this fantasy world, ruling over all the others. Unfortunately, it's king is less than cooperative. During the mix of it all, Itami somehow finds a way to keep making a name for himself. Whether it is being in the right place at the right time or being able to help people in need, he is usually there. A harem of sorts starts forming around him, consisting of a variety of locals. Tuka is an elf which he rescues from the pit of a well after her father threw her down in it to save her from the attack of the fire dragon which killed her entire village. Lelei is a human mage, her and her fellow villagers were saved when Itami and his squad managed to ward off the fire dragon. She is a very adept mage and also takes a liking to Japan's culture, becoming an interpreter later in the series. Yao is a dark elf, who joins Itami after he helps her with her problems. Lastly we have Rory, the demigod that takes a liking to Itami almost immediately after learning he was helping many people. She, quite often, attempts to seduce him. I would personally recommend this anime to anyone and everyone. It is a comedic driven story, but has a ton of depth and goes into the various sides of war. We get to see how political and the media affects the war and how the JSDF can act. We also get to see what it's like for those that just get caught up in the war. It is interesting to see how Japan handles the war front knowing that it could very easily wipe of the entire fantasy world. The characters are great, Itami is not an over powered main character, but he is not useless either, which is nice.
