Plot / Story Ushio to Tora is a reboot of an old anime series based off of a manga. It is commonly referred to as Ushio and Tora, or even just Ushio. It uses an older animation and art style that looks beautiful. Our main story, you guessed it, follows a boy named Ushio. His family has guarded a sacred temple for generations, in fact, his father often tells him stories about their ancestors and powerful, demon spirits known as Youkai. Obviously, Ushio knows that these are just stories, or are they? One day while in the temple, Ushio finds a door on the floor that leads underneath the temple. Curious, he follows the stairs down into the dark abyss where he makes a shocking discover. There, crouched in the corner, with a spear impaling it, is a tiger-like monster that looks very happy to see Ushio. The monster immediately demands that the boy, Ushio, release him from his imprisonment that is being caused by the spear. We learn that this spear is a special, powerful spear that is known as the Beast Spear. It's sole purpose in life is to slay Youkai. Of course, it has quite the tragic back story, but you find that out later. The monster, known as Nagatobimaru, pleads to the boy to release him. Of course, he also gets too ahead of himself and tells the boy that he will devour him as soon as he is released. Ushio initially decides to leave the monster locked in eternal imprisonment, but when he opened the door to the room the Youkai's aura escaped and is attracting other Youkai. With the threat of thousands of Youkai drawing near, Ushio releases Nagatobimaru from his imprisonment. Of course, true to his promise, he immediately tries to devour the boy, but he didn't expect Ushio to be an ancestor to the man that imprisoned him. The Beast Spear comes to Ushio's aid, transforming him into a fearsome warrior. Nagatobimaru quickly changes his attitude toward the boy, but still says he will devour him the first chance he gets. Forcefully, Nagatobimaru decides to help the boy with the immediate threat of the oncoming Youkai. Afterwards, Nagatobimaru, now being referred to as Tora, vows that he shall haunt Ushio until the day he can eat him. Thus, a strange bond is formed that will progress throughout the rest of the series. The two slowly grow closer as Ushio travels to find out the truth about his mother and, ultimately, face mankind and Youkai's worst enemy. Overall I would recommend this anime series to anyone who really enjoys the action / adventure type. The old art style and animation is pretty neat, it really takes you back to the old anime days. The story is a little linear, much like older anime series, with pretty much one major fight per episode. The combination of action and comedic moments blend together beautifully and make you want to keep watching the series. So check it out, it's worth it!
