Plot / Story Humanity has been driven underground by the Spiral King Lordgenome, their numbers dwindle as the underground barely has enough resources to support life. We follow the story of two members of Giha village, a digger and a rebel. Simon the digger is very talented at his craft, he often says how the ground speaks to him, telling him where the easiest parts to dig are. He is also very lonely, many members of the village reject him as weird or smelly. Both of his parents were killed in a deathly earthquake that shook the entire village, causing debris to fall from the ceiling. Kamina the rebel is the opposite, he dreams of reaching the surface one day and reuniting with his father. No one believes that he was on the surface as a child, but he knows it is true. He is constantly thinking up ways to try and escape the village and reach the surface! He may be cocky, but he also looks after young Simon. Offering him friendship and confidence. One day, Simon discovered a couple of peculiar items on his digging adventures: a small spiral, and a robot head. He immediately goes to get Kamina, or his bro as he they refer to each other as, to investigate the mysterious robot. As fate would have it, a giant robotic creature crashed through the ceiling, landing in the middle of the town. The robot started terrorizing the village, and Kamina, being Kamina, decided to take his sword and boast about himself. Right before the fight began, a hot, gunslinger girl that we know as Yoko comes swinging down from the ceiling, blasting the creature all the way. The three escape inside the village where Simon leads them to the robotic head he discovered. Simon has the idea that they could pilot the machine to fight off the one outside, Kamina boastfully agrees, giving a mighty speech that pretty much just ends up with him naming the head Lagann. They are able to repel the creature, that they learn is called a gunman, out of the village. Once at the surface, they learn of the grim situation. Yoko explains that the gunmen are powered by beastmen, and their only objective is to destroy any human that dares adventure onto the surface. Kamina is not one to back down from a challenge, so on the next attack by the gunmen he takes a liking to one, and decides to steal it. Once he is in control of the gunman, he names is Gurren. It's at this time that they (mostly Kamina) decide they are going to hunt down the enemy headquarters and end the rule of tyranny once and for all. They meet a lot of friends on their journey, and a lot of enemies. They also discover they have unique abilities, such as Lagann's ability to combine and control any gunman. Simon and Kamina combine before almost every fight once they discover this, to which Kamina names the combined gunman a clever Gurren Lagann. Along the way they have to deal with a sort of arch nemesis in a beastman known as Viral, they also have to deal with the Spiral King's four generals. Even after the final battle with the Spiral King himself, the series is far from over. I won't ruin that for you though, you'll just have to watch and find out! Sequels At the moment there appears to be plans to come out with a season two for this series. No one really knows how they are going to continue the series, since the ending was pretty absolute if you ask me. Anyway, I think it may follow a younger member of team Dai Gurren known as Gimmy, since he now holds the spiral key. We will see though! Overall You should definitely watch this anime if you are a fan of old school fight scenes. The series came out in 2007, but still holds true to this very day. It does have the kind of annoying sequences where they have to announce their every fight move, but that fits in with the style of the anime. The comedy that is wrapped around the action and the subtle sexual jokes and pokes at government will have you rolling laughing.
