Overall / Plot The Irregular is an anime series that, like most, is set in an alternate timeline. We start off with a nice little history lesson of what happens, which, is pretty much just the backstory of how World War III broke out. Out of this war came the creation of special people called magicians. They were the only one's with the ability to handle magic, and therefore were extremely valuable to any side. Just one magician could turn the entire battlefield upside down. We start off seeing our young main character, Tatsuya, on the battlefield. He is a very special magician, having incredible power. We see him make quick work of a fleet of approaching warships, while his sister, Miyuki, watches through a screen safely away from the battle. The two are part of one of the master clans that are located in Japan. They have quite the unique history. Due to his power, Tatsuya was originally going to be killed. Instead, the clan limited his emotions, except for the love he felt for his sister, and genetically altered his sister to be the perfect magician, so that she could limit his power. Tatsuya was trained for one purpose only, to protect Miyuki. Rejected by his clan, Tatsuya is almost always ignored by other clan members, which bothers Miyuki. Nevertheless, Tatsuya, and his many aliases, continues to strive to make breakthroughs in technology for magicians. Since magicians are unique, they are expected to attend a magic school to home their skills. Tatsuya and Miyuki decided to attend First High School, which has its own segregation problems. Upon entering, the magician must take an exam that will decide whether they are a First Course Student or a Second Course Student. First Course Students are seen as more advanced and get better equipment and such, unlike their "weed" counterparts. Naturally, Miyuki is a First Class Student, but she is torn whenever she feels her brother has been misclassified as a Second Course Student. Tatsuya isn't bothered by the classification, since he actually points out the aspects of his skills that are lacking (little do you know, those skills are lacking because he is a beast in another form of magic). The students at First High first attempt to split the two, since all of the First Course students try to get Miyuki to avoid her "weed" brother due to his projected skill level. It's only after Tatsuya one-hits a First Course Student in a duel that some start to rethink their opinions of him. The story is mostly made up of arising conflicts, each of the major sections have their own specific conflict. Such as the Enrollment section, its major conflict is terrorist that attack the school. The magicians are forced to defend themselves from the attack, and we learn a little bit about what they are after. Other sections include a sort of "Olympic" games held by all of the magic schools and also a research competition, both having their own conflicts within them, naturally. We learn a little bit about Tatsuya's clan, and what he plans to do about their Aunt, the current leader. Overall Basically, I enjoyed the anime series. Where I am torn is the fact that I don't exactly know what was going on half the time. It is easy to get lost within all of the names and the terminology. Some of the things they discuss, such as CAD specs and what not, just go completely over my head. As a result, I feel like I miss some information. Especially when it comes to the conflicts, I have no idea what is really going on, but the fights are pretty awesome. I hate the fact that almost every character is over powered, but that's fine. Tatsuya is an awesome main character, even though he is crazy over powered, but it's cool, cause he's awesome. I would recommend this anime if you don't mind the subtle hints at "sibling love." Miyuki is clearly in love with her brother, which is odd, but the fact that Tatsuya jokes about it is enough to make you laugh instead of being weirded out. Anyway, give it a whirl!
