Running a septic truck service can be a lucrative business that would appear to have a certain amount of stability, since there is always a need for the work done by this type of company. Providing such work can sometimes be the easier part of the job as customers certainly expect that this type of work be done properly. So it is important to properly manage company septic truck tanks and unloading facilities. Failure to do that could create equipment and environmental problems - or even result in a fine, all of which can be avoided by the proper management of the waste material. Proper Tank Truck Management In a general septic management program, there are limitations as to what can and cannot be put into the truck's tanks and eventually into similar on-site sewage containers where tankers empty the sewage. Because this material is treated and then disposed of at waste water plants, it is critical that any waste material entering treatment facilities be only material that will be accepted by the plant. Waste water cannot treat sewage in a normal way if it contains any oily substances from restaurant grease traps; this is also true with commercial or industrial waste water because there is no way to confirm what substances are in the waste water. Hazardous material in waste water that is accidentally mixed with other material could cause a chemical reaction or affect how the treatment process actually works; so treatment plants are very specific about knowing what is in the tanks primarily because tankers containing commercial and industrial sewage are processed differently. Current Treatment Procedures There are different ways to handle the treatment of sewage or waste material: Municipal Treatment Plants - Sewage is transferred to plants, treated and then disposed of as clean landfill. Some plants work with companies that separate sewage ahead of time, sending only water to be treated and then treating solids and using it as landfill because they are biodegradable. Either way, it is important to know that tanks contain only liquids and material that is deemed standard sewage. Waste Water Land Application - In some regions where there are designated areas for sewage, some companies apply treated sewage directly to the land. The difficulty with this is that although the EPA does have certain regulations for where sewage can be applied, there is no actual method on how it should be done to avoid environmental issues like ground water contamination, etc. Companies that land apply their waste material must know the specific areas available at any given time for the spreading of sewage. Because of the many potential environmental hazards that exist, waste water treatment is done with a great deal of safety in mind by following all necessary procedures to prevent spills, avoid accidentally mixing substances, and eliminate contamination, all of which can affect the local environment as well at residents, animals, and plants. With different ways to handle different types of waste material, it is important that any company using septic trucks have a disposal plan worked out ahead of time. Sending material to the right place is essential, as it would certainly be problematic to end up with full storage tanks and no contract as to where it should be sent. It should also be stressed that septic truck operators know what material should not be put into their tanks; if it should happen accidentally, an operator must inform sewage site managers before simply dumping the material with everything else. Only with these kinds of precautions can waste water be appropriately treated and dumped and not become a health risk. This is indeed how waste material should be properly handled!
