Some people don't follow up on their intentions to stop smoking. Use the tips you've read here to quit smoking today and never look back. Combine these tips with your common sense, in order to quit smoking for good.

The first step of any program to stop smoking is making the commitment to see it through. Many people are not really ready to quit smoking and that is why they ultimately fail. To stay motivated, it is important to remember why you initially wanted to quit.

If you have quit smoking recently, keep a big bag of lollipops close by. When you feel like smoking, instead have a sucker. The sucker stick will keep your hand busy, just like holding a cigarette. Also, the candy can fulfill your oral craving. The dual action can provide an adequate substitute for having a cigarette.

You should begin by making a list of every reason why you want to quit smoking. Put any reasons you come up with on the list. When you feel the urge to smoke, pull out your list. That will help you to remember what is important, and will reinforce your dedication to quitting.

Be careful about what you eat. It is not a good idea to diet while quitting smoking. However, eat balanced meals as much as possible. Studies have shown that fruits, veggies and low-fat dairy products will leave a bad taste in your mouth if you smoke. Eating these food items may help you quit smoking.

Try using deep breathing exercises to help you deal with cravings. Breathe in through your nose as you count to ten in your mind. Then hold your breath for as long as you can, then exhale for another ten count. Breathing exercises can be a good distraction from the cravings and can reduce that urge-related stress. Not only does this technique calm you down, but it increases your awareness of how well your respiratory system recovers each day that you do not smoke.

It can be very emotionally challenging to quit smoking. Craving a cigarette is tough and it's easy to succumb to temptation. Keep a journal to document your cravings so you can better understand when and why they arise. This will help you create better strategies to fight your cravings.

It is important to approach your journey by focusing on a single day at a time. Giving up the tobacco habit is a long process. Do not even think about the future. Take each day as it comes and concentrate on not smoking that day, which will help establish a habit that will help you over the long term.

To become more successful with quitting smoking, try writing the cons and pros of quitting. Putting things on paper can have a profound effect on your mental outlook. It can keep you focused on your goal, which should make it easier to quit.

You have to persevere through the challenging times to successfully stop smoking. You are more likely to stick to your guns if you cling to your original motivation for quitting. Keep in mind to utilize the tips given to you in the above article. By doing this, you're on the right track towards permanently eliminating this bad habit.
