I have been writing articles for Detroit City Limits for a few months now –sharing tips and information I have acquired working as a Project Manager for a local marketing firm. And even though it’s only a monthly column it takes me multiple hours to put together ‘simple articles’ on a topics that I am well versed in. If you’re like me writing is a daunting task and can be exhausting at times. I’m great at expressing myself verbally and enjoy one-on-one conversations but struggle when it comes to putting my thoughts down on paper so to speak. A level of anxiety comes over me whenever I even think about writing projects that need my attention. Luckily for me we have staff writers on hand that take care of all of our copy (also known as content) for client projects. I didn’t realize how spoiled our writing team has made me until I started writing for DCL a few months back. I constantly lean on our word gurus whenever I need wording for new projects (including our own). Unfortunately for me, every month I personally write my little article in hopes of giving readers some insight from the things I see and hear working at Fusion. So as I said I’ve been writing my monthly article myself without the help of our staff. Big job right? It’s only a 500 word article –anyone can do that with ease. I estimate that I put in a cumulative 4 to 5 hours into each article and it takes me almost all month to complete my final draft. I can’t speak for you but I don’t have 4 to 5 hours to dedicate to writing a single article. So what? Why even mention your shortcomings when it comes to writing articles? I chose this topic because I am currently testing out new Dragon software that I picked up earlier this morning. This is actually the first article that I’m writing (or talking). The program seems pretty easy to use and is definitely saving me some time. My only complaint is that it’s not as user friendly as most people would probably like and took me roughly an hour to set up. I also had to trouble shoot the microphone that came with the program and did not count this as part of the setup process. In closing, if you cringe the same way I do when it comes to writing –Dragon software might be a good investment as it’s getting me through this article faster. On the other hand there’s definitely a learning curve and I wouldn’t suggest the program if you’re not pretty good with technology.
